Here's How Much Watchung, Green Brook School Leaders Earn

WATCHUNG/GREEN BROOK, NJ — Some of the highest paid superintendents and principals in New Jersey work in Watchung and Green Brook.

The Department of Education recently released its annual list of New Jersey superintendents and principals and their salaries before the start of the 2018-19 school year. And the list of educators making $150,000 or more — a list that barely had any educators on it two decades ago — has grown in recent years.

It's also a small fraction of the more than 100,000 people who are teachers and administrators in public and charter schools in this state. But the highest earners also come from all different schools — not just the so-called "wealthy" districts that routinely rank highly on national and state lists for best schools.

In Somerset County, Harold Dunsavage, Superintendent of the Somerset County Education Service Commissio was the highest paid and ranked at number 16 in the state. He has 37 years and makes $210,562. Bridgewater followed with Russell Lazovick, Superintendent of Bridgewater-Raritan Regional ranked at number 81 in the state, has 1 year of service and makes $191,584.

No. 391: Barbara Resko, Superintendent, Watchung Borough, 12 years, $155,850

Principals, including years of service and New Jersey rank:

No. 168: Mary Nunn, Middle School Principal, Valley View School, Watchung Borough, 37 years, $167,510

No. 191: Geroge Alexis, High School Principal, Watchung Hills Regional High School, Watchung Hills Regional, 37 years, $165,765

No. 1,248: James Bigsby, Middle School Principal, Green Brook Middle School, Green Brook Township, 3 years, $132,586

No. 1,940: Susan Wardell, Elementary School Principal, Irene E. Feldkirchner Elementary School, Green Brook Township, 4, $113,300

No. 2,141: Michael Vignola, Elementary School Principal, Bayberry School, Watchung Borough, 12 years, $102,500

In 2017-2018, the median salary for administrators totaled $123,906, according to a Patch analysis of salary data for public school districts and charter schools. The increase was about 1 percent higher than the previous year.
