Karate and Reading Club Programs for Youth with Special Needs Continue this Winter
Great Rec Programs for Youth with Special Needs!
Youth with special needs or those who could use a little help and encouragement in participating in recreation are welcome to register for two “TryCAN” special needs programs that are continuing this winter.
One program is Karate. Through fun drills and games, children ages 5-9 learn basic martial arts concepts while also improving socialization, fitness, motor skills, focus and confidence. Sensei Carmen, a martial arts expert who has been teaching in recreation and after school programs for 25 years, is the instructor. Karate will meets Fridays from 4:30-5:15 pm from January 23 to February 27 (no class 2/20).
The other program is Reading Club which meets on Tuesdays from 5:00-5:45 pm. This affordable group class is designed for children ages 5-9 to help children with special needs or otherwise struggling or reluctant readers experience the joys of reading. In an embarrassment and failure free setting, the class will capitalize on strengths, instill self-confidence and foster a Can-Do attitude to help children read more confidently. The Club works on core skills depending on your child’s area (such as decoding, word attack, comprehension, making appropriate reading choices) using books, games, music and other activities. Led by Sarah Hanson, a Certified Teacher who has a wealth of experience as a teacher in the school system and well as extensive experience teaching reading to students with unique needs and experience working in youth recreation.
