Looking for Work, She Finds Fraud

International scheme cost woman more than $1,000.

A 20-year-old Green Brook woman was hoping to find a few babysitting gigs when she found www.sittercity.com, but instead found a link to an international scam that cost her more than $1,000 between May 28 and June 6.

The website redirected the victim to another site, promoting "work from home" options, including a position as a personal assistant to a "Michael Petersen," of Hyde Park, London.

After email telephone contacts, the victim was asked to complete several small administrative tasks, including to deposit a $1,575 check—of which she was to send $1,075 to a "Laura Campbell," in Degenham, England. The remaining $500 was hers to keep as salary.

The victim completed the job, and was sent a second check with similar instructions, but when she went to TD Bank to deposit the check, she was informed the first had been returned for non-sufficient funds.

The checks were issued by "South Athletics Inc.," of Miami.
