A Mount Saint Mary Academy teacher is among three educators in the New York area who will be honored this month by the Council for Economic Education.

Kathleen Brennan and two others will receive the Alfred P. Sloan Teaching Champion awards at the CEE’s annual Visionary Awards gala on Oct. 22.

The Sloan Award is presented to economic educators in the New York metropolitan area who have shown excellence and innovative teaching methods in their classrooms. The award aims to promote economic literacy at the K-12 level by recognizing teachers who effectively deliver this content in their classrooms and achieve results.

"We are thrilled to present the Sloan awards to these outstanding teachers,” said Nan J. Morrison, CEE president and CEO.  “We hope that the honorees and their achievements will inspire even more teachers to integrate economics into the classroom.”

Brennan has been an educator for 14 years and teaches AP Economics, AP Statistics and Financial Literacy at Mount Saint Mary’s School. She strives to make each lesson unique and keeps her students engaged by offering a variety of interactive activities during her lessons, such as videos, skits, songs and podcasts.

In addition to Brennan, Saji James, of Conrad High School in Staten Island, N.Y., and Wendy Garcia-Buchanan, of Park Avenue Elementary in Freehold, will receive the awards.

James teaches economics and global history to 10th- to 12th-graders at Conrad High School. Throughout his 15 years in education, James has dedicated his work to teaching at alternative or transfer schools. At Conrad, James teaches students who need a second chance to earn their high school diploma. He works hard to motivate his students by relating his lessons to their everyday lives.

Garcia-Buchanan has spent 19 years teaching students from kindergarten to fourth grade. She has created innovative lessons in her economics class by having her students create a fictitious family for which they must budget and invest the family funds. Buchanan’s students participate in The Stock Market Game during which they use technology to research stocks and companies to inform their investment decisions.

Honorees will each receive $5,000 and their respective school will receive a cash award of $2,500 to use to support economic and financial education. Honorees will also be offered the opportunity to share best practices with their colleagues by co-facilitating a training workshop for area teachers and sharing their best lessons with teachers nationwide through CEE’s online assets.

The awards will be presented along with the CEE Visionary Awards on Oct. 22 at The Pierre Hotel in New York.
