Photo shoots boost seniors' self-esteem

Memory Care Living seniors enjoy a seasonal photo shoot, while potentially warding off health problems.

The idea for a senior photo shoot was born out of a partnership between the staff and Ann Bongiovani, the hairdresser, at Memory Care Living® at Woodcliff Lake. Every Wednesday, when Ann would come for her appointments, the residents would always look and feel so good. Why not take that good feeling a step further?

A date was set and the summer photo shoot was talked about a lot with the residents during their daily activities, making the shoot a special event to look forward to. A colorful, playful set of beach gear was created: umbrella, chairs, hat, towel, ball, leis, and tropical drinks. Each resident had their hair and make-up done, and they wore their favorite outfits. One by one, they posed on set for the camera like supermodels. There were a lot of laughs and smiles before, during, and after the photo shoot.

“It is always nice to get dressed up,” commented Trudie, a resident. “Posing like this made me feel beautiful and important.”

A recent Autumn photo shoot engaged the residents’ creative talents in building an indoor set. Apple trees, scarecrows, pumpkins and other seasonal items were painted and arranged prior to the photos.

The success of the activity has spread to other Memory Care Living® homes across northern and central New Jersey, from Mahwah to Princeton.

“It’s nice for the residents to be able to share these photos with their families and friends, and it really boosts their self esteem, “ said Memory Care Living® Programming Director, Christine Berkner.

A recent study published in the journal Psychoneuroendrocrinology states that maintaining or improving self-esteem could help prevent health problems in seniors, especially for those who have had a history of stress or depression.
