(Warren, NJ – September 14, 2014) –Temple Har Shalom will support Candlelighters NYC by “Going Gold” for the month of September to help inspire members of the New Jersey community to raise awareness and recognition of children who are diagnosed with cancer each day. Candlelighters NYC is an organization dedicated to helping families get through the difficult times when a child is diagnosed with and being treated for cancer. The organization assists through all stages: discovery, diagnosis, treatment and remission.
Temple Har Shalom will be joining Go Gold campaign by offering a special service in honor of Candlelighters NYC children on Friday, September 19 at 7:30pm. Community members will be encouraged to wear gold attire to Shabbat services to further support this initiative. The temple’s Mitzvah Action Committee will also participate in spreading the word by having religious school students donned in gold. Congregants will receive a special handmade gold ribbon and will receive gold yarmulkes to honor a child affected by cancer.

In addition, special guest Barbara Zobian, Executive Director of Candlelighters NYC will speak to the congregation about childhood cancer awareness and the organization.
“As President of Candlelighters NYC, I have experienced first-hand the battle that so many children face every day due to this disease.” said Barbara Zobian, “I am honored to partner with Temple Har Shalom to help raise awareness for the children.”
Pediatric cancer remains the leading cause of death by disease in children and the incidence of invasive cancer in children is up to 29% in the last 20 years. Each day, 26 children are diagnosed with childhood cancer across the nation. Despite much progress and resolution, financial support has not reached the same level of national awareness as many other campaigns.
“Supporting this initiative within our synagogue community raises awareness of this devastating diagnosis and fulfills our mission to offer both spiritual support to families and financial support thought the giving of tzedakah,” said Rabbi Randi Musnitsky spiritual leader of Temple Har Shalom.
