Springfield Woman Killed In Car Crash In Watchung

WATCHUNG, NJ — A Springfield woman was killed after her husband lost control of their car and crashed into a Warren driver in Watchung on Sunday, police report.

Stamatios Kouteoumbis, 73, of Springfield was driving north on Hillcrest Road in Watchung on June 18 at 6 p.m., when he lost control of his 2003 Jeep and crossed over into the southbound lanes, police reported.

After crossing over, the Jeep crashed into a 2002 Ford van driven by Richard Washkau, 63, of Warren. The van struck the front passenger side door of the Jeep, injuring the front seat passenger Avgi Kouteoumbis, 75, of Springfield, police report.

Avgi Kouteoumbis was transported to Morristown Hospital where life-saving measures were unsuccessful and she ultimately died from her injuries, police report.

Stamatios Kouteoumbis was also transported to Morristown Hospital where he was listed in serious but stable condition. Washkau suffered only minor injuries, police report.

Both vehicles were towed from the scene and the accident remains under investigation. Hillcrest Road was closed until 9 p.m. while the scene was investigated and cleared.
