Three Hospitalized After Accident Caused by Drunken Driver

Watchung police say Misael Chavez-Martinez was traveling the wrong way in the westbound lanes on Route 22.

Watchung police charged Misael Chavez-Martinez, 33, of Staten Island, N.Y., with driving while intoxicated after they said he caused an accident on Route 22 that sent three people to Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center, at about 1:50 a.m. March 23.

According to the police report, Chavez-Martinez was traveling in the wrong direction on the westbound lanes of Route 22 near the Blue Star Shopping Center when the accident with two other vehicles occurred.

Chavez-Martinez and a passenger in his vehicle were not injured, but police said three others were taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries. Police said the nature and extent of the injuries was not determined.

Chavez-Martinez was charged with several motor vehicle violations in addition to the DWI charge.
