$3.5M Grant Approved For Passaic County Road Safety Improvements

Money will be used to install noise strips and improve safety on curved roads.

WAYNE, NJ - Passaic County will receive $3.5 million in grants to apply a surface treatment and rumble strips to improve safety on roadways throughout the county.

North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority (NJTPA) approved the grants this week.

“These grants will help us address dangerous road conditions throughout Passaic County, reducing the risk of crashes at curves and helping drivers remain alert on the roads,” said Freeholder John Bartlett, who represents Passaic County on the NJTPA Board of Trustees.

The improvements will be completed as part of two separate projects:

  • $3 million in friction surface treatments, which are designed to reduce skidding and allow drivers to better maintain control of a vehicle in wet and dry road conditions. They will be installed on various curved roads throughout the county.
  • Installation of 76 miles of centerline rumble strips, which help inform people their vehicle has left the safe lane of travel, on 27 roadways in the county. The project will cost $500,000.

The projects are part of the NJTPA’s Local Safety Program, which provides federal funds to counties for high-impact, “quick-fix” and cost-effective safety improvements.
