Air Quality Alert In Wayne Friday As NJ Wildfire Continues Burning

WAYNE, NJ — An air quality alert for Wayne will last until 11 p.m. Friday, with wildfire smoke and ozone making breathing difficult for some people.

The amount of ground-level ozone and fire particulate in the region may exceed unhealthy standards for breathing, weather experts said.

"Sensitive individuals, including the very young, the elderly, and persons with respiratory diseases such as asthma, should avoid strenuous activities during the afternoon and early evening hours," said the National Weather Service.

A fire in West Milford has been burning since Wednesday night; firefighters have made progress overnight and reopened Macopin Road.

The air quality alert is in effect until 11 p.m for Bergen, Passaic, Hudson, Essex, and Union counties, said the NWS.
