The latest incident follows a string of shootings in the area over the last month, one of which put a six-year-old in the hospital.

PASSAIC COUNTY, NJ — A teenager was shot this morning in Passaic County, according to prosecutors.

On Friday, around 12:45 a.m., police were called to the area of North 3rd Street and Temple Street in Paterson on reports of shots being fired.

Authorities arrived to find a 16-year-old gunshot victim in the roadway. The teen was rushed to a nearby hospital to be treated for nonfatal wounds, authorities said.

Paterson police said they were able to establish a crime scene in the area where the victim was found.

The investigation is underway, and anyone who may have witnessed the shooting or may have additional information is asked to call the Paterson Police Detective Bureau at 973-321-1120.

This is the latest of a string of shootings in the area. On May 19, a 14-year-old boy was shot and left for dead on a Paterson sidewalk.

A week earlier, two men in Paterson were shot. Just a few miles away in Passaic, two women and a six-year-old child were shot several hours later.

On Mother's Day, a mass shooting in Paterson claimed the lives of two people and sent four more to the hospital.

No arrests have been announced in any of the aforementioned shootings as of Tuesday morning. There has been no indication from authorities that they are related.

Gun violence in Paterson, according to local police, has been down in recent years. Police say last year, the number of people shot in Paterson has dropped compared to 2024, with 41 shooting victims compared to 83, a 50.6 percent decrease.

Local authorities cited “the ongoing efforts of the PPD and community partners to reduce gun violence and improve safety across the city” as the reason for the drop in shootings.
