WAYNE, NJ — Wayne will receive more than $2 million in state funding to repair a key bridge carrying Boonton Turnpike and Mountainview Boulevard (U.S. Route 202) over the Pompton River, as part of New Jersey's Fiscal Year 2026 Local Bridges Fund.
The township was awarded $2,021,424 for the Superstructure Replacement and Substructure Repairs project on Bridge No. 1600-024, Gov. Mikie Sherrill's administration announced this week.
The funding is part of a statewide $44 million investment through the New Jersey Department of Transportation's Local Bridges Fund, which provides grants to all 21 counties to repair, reconstruct and replace county-owned bridges with structural deficiencies.
"Keeping our infrastructure in a state of good repair is critical to the safety, reliability and capability of our transportation system," NJDOT Commissioner Priya Jain said in a statement. "The NJDOT's Local Bridge Fund supports the Department's state of good repair goal by providing counties with the resources needed to make critical bridge improvements."
The Wayne project will focus on replacing the bridge's superstructure and repairing its substructure, helping extend the life of the heavily traveled crossing over the Pompton River.
The Local Bridges Fund is financed through the New Jersey Transportation Trust Fund. Every county receives at least $1 million annually, with additional funding distributed based on the amount of bridge deck area in the county and the condition of those bridges.
Since the program began in 2009, funding has helped improve 637 bridges across New Jersey, according to NJDOT.
The grants are administered by the NJDOT Division of Local Aid and Economic Development and evaluated by the Division of Bridge Engineering and Infrastructure Management.
