NJ Man Fired BB Gun At Neighbors, Barricaded Himself In Home: Police

PASSAIC COUNTY, NJ — A Passaic County man has been arrested after firing a BB gun at his neighbors and locking himself in his home, police say.

On Sunday evening, police were called to a Woodrow Avenue home in Woodland Park on reports of somebody firing a BB gun at residents.

Authorities learned that a resident was firing a BB rifle at neighbors, police say. Once law enforcement arrived, the shooter ran inside and locked the door, officials said.

Police said the shooter refused to exit the house and refused to give up the rifle. Eventually, the BB rifle was recovered after it’d fallen from a second-story window, authorities added.

Still, the man refused to leave the home, and authorities were unsure if there were more weapons inside, according to police.

After hours of trying to establish communication with the man, and several “attempts at peaceful negotiations” were unsuccessful, police forcibly entered the home just before midnight.

The man was apprehended without incident. He was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation before being processed.

The man, whose identity police have not released, is charged with aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, certain persons not to possess a weapon, and criminal mischief. Additionally, authorities found him to have several outstanding warrants from other jurisdictions.

He is being held by the Passaic County Sheriff’s Department while awaiting court proceedings.
