PASSAIC COUNTY, NJ — A Passaic County "doctor" is facing murder charges after a medical procedure gone wrong left a 27-year-old woman dead, according to prosecutors.
On Tuesday, Luis Rojas Cabrera, 56, of Passaic, was arraigned in New York court on second-degree murder, manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, reckless endangerment, and unauthorized practice charges.
The charges stem from July 19, when Cabrera delivered a NAD+ intravenous injection, an anti-aging therapy not approved by the Food and Drug Administration, to Elizabeth Baron, 27, at a wellness center he operated in the Bronx, NY, officials said.
Authorities added that Cabrera was not licensed to practice medicine in New York State at the time of the incident.
Officials said Baron passed out shortly after the injection and was rushed to a nearby hospital where she died an hour later, according to prosecutors.
Authorities determined Baron's cause of death to be a cardiac air embolism, due to air being introduced into her vein at the hands of Cabrera, according to prosecutors.
"This defendant was allegedly operating a medical clinic even
though he was not licensed to practice medicine in New York State," Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark said in a statement. "A young woman seeking health benefits instead had her life cut tragically short. We will get justice for this victim's family."
Investigators have tracked down at least two other patients who have received similar injections from Cabrera. Prosecutors did not share their conditions.
Cabrera posted bond and is due back in court on Oct. 27 for proceedings.
