PASSAIC COUNTY, NJ — A Passaic County child was recently arrested after robbing two people at gunpoint in an online marketplace scheme, officials said.
On Sept. 21, on two separate occasions, the child arranged meetings with people in Paterson who were looking to sell items on an online marketplace, police said. Both robberies happened in broad daylight in the area of Seventh Avenue and East 26th Street, officials added.
During both interactions, the child brandished a gun and stole the items the victims intended to sell, according to authorities. The stolen items included an iPhone and an expensive watch, officials added.
After weeks of investigation, the Paterson Police Department's Investigative Services Bureau Juvenile Unit identified the child. The suspect was arrested on Wednesday and charged with three counts of robbery and several weapons offenses.
"People should be able to buy and sell items online without fear of becoming victims of a crime," Paterson Officer in Charge Patrick Murray said. "We are taking steps to help residents conduct these transactions safely, and anyone who uses these meetups as an opportunity to threaten or rob others will be pursued and held accountable."
Police are using the robberies as an opportunity to remind residents to use caution when meeting online sellers in person. Officials recommend people meet with sellers accompanied by a friend at a public place during daylight hours, only after verifying the other party's details.
"Walk away if something does not feel right," police said.
