Andrew Bernstein Named Medical Director, Oncology at Chilton

Widely Respected by Peers and Patients Alike; Dr. Bernstein Served As Long-Time Associate Director at Chilton Medical Center

Andrew M. Bernstein, D.O., a highly respected hematologist and medical oncologist with deep roots in the community, has been named medical director, oncology for Chilton Medical Center, Pompton Plains, N.J. Dr. Bernstein, who is board certified in internal medicine, hematology and medical oncology, previously served as associate director of oncology at the medical center, and has had a thriving private practice in Pompton Plains since 2006. Dr. Bernstein has clinical expertise in the treatment of breast, colon and lung cancer, among other malignancies. Chilton Cancer Center is part of Atlantic Health System Cancer Care.

Dr. Bernstein will lead a wide range of clinical activities at Chilton Medical Center, from ensuring that patient care meets the highest standards to leading the medical center’s tumor boards, which meet regularly to discuss cancer cases and share knowledge. Among his many responsibilities, he will be leading Chilton Medical Center’s clinical research programs.

“It has been my privilege to serve the Chilton community for the past 12 years. During that time, my practice has delivered state-of-the-art treatments in a more personalized setting,” said Dr. Bernstein. “As chairman, I will see to it that our center will continue to provide individualized treatment plans often incorporating tumor sequencing and immunotherapy when appropriate, as well as continue to work collaboratively with our surgical and radiation oncology colleagues to provide the highest level of multidisciplinary care.”

Dr. Bernstein received his Bachelor of Arts in Biology from New York University, and earned his medical degree from the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine, Old Westbury, N.Y. He completed his internal medicine residency at Long Island Jewish Medical Center (New Hyde Park, N.Y.), where he was named chief resident. He then completed a fellowship in hematology/oncology at Mount Sinai Medical Center, New York, N.Y., where he was appointed chief fellow.

Dr. Bernstein received many honors and awards while completing his medical education. While in medical school, he was elected to Psi Sigma Alpha – the National Osteopathic Honor Society. As an intern and resident at Long Island Jewish Medical Center, Dr. Bernstein was first named Intern of the Year – Internal Medicine and later named Teaching Resident of the Year – Internal Medicine.

Throughout his undergraduate and medical education, Dr. Bernstein conducted laboratory studies, many of them focused on specialized kidney cells known as mesangial cells. While completing his hematology/oncology fellowship at Mount Sinai Medical Center he authored a textbook chapter on the hematologic effects of liver disease.

“Dr. Bernstein has certainly earned his share of honors, and has been selected for leadership positions throughout his years of graduate medical education,” said Dr. Whitman. “We look forward to him applying his extraordinary abilities as a leader, as well as his clinical skills, compassion and knowledge of the community, to this key position within Atlantic Health System Cancer Care.”

The Chilton Cancer Center is accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. The Chilton Breast Center has been designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology.
