BB Gun-Armed NJ Man Threatens To Kill Grocery Store Worker: Cops

PASSAIC COUNTY, NJ — A Passaic County man faces several charges after threatening to kill a grocery store employee, officials said.

Adolfo Barrientos, 40, of Paterson, was arrested this weekend after entering a grocery store with a weapon and making threats, police said.

On Friday, around 2 p.m., police were called to Food Universe on Lexington Avenue in Clifton on reports of a trespasser.

Police said that Food Universe recognized Barrientos from an incident in June, when he entered the shop and "created a disturbance and made threats."

In that instance, Barrientos was told by police that if he returned to the store, he would be arrested and charged, officials said.

Police say when Barrientos returned to the business on Friday, he was asked to leave by employees. It was then that he announced he had a gun and threatened to kill an employee, police added.

Barrientos then pulled "what appeared to be a handgun" and threw it on the ground, before picking it up, authorities said.

Employees called the police, and Barrientos was arrested without incident outside of the business. The weapon ended up being "a realistic-looking black handgun" that shoots only plastic pellets.

Barrientos was charged with possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, defiant trespass, and terroristic threats. He was taken to the Passaic County Sheriff's Office Corrections Hub to await court proceedings.
