Bergen High School Pitcher Declared Cancer-Free

Josh Cohen never considered giving up against Ewing Scarcoma. He will walk in the Relay For Life at Ramapo High School this weekend.

Josh Cohen just struck out the most dangerous opponent he has ever faced: Cancer.

Cohen was declared cancer-free last week after 14 chemo and radiation treatments. Just in time for the school's annual Relay For Life Friday. Students from Ramapo High School and Indian Hills High School are jointly running the event.

When asked if he was scared when fighting against cancer, the Indian Hills pitcher gave the quick response of "No, not at all."

Cohen will be one of the people who will kickoff the 12-hour event. He and dozens of other will walk around the track at Ramapo High School for the survivor's lap. Once complete, hundreds of other people are expected to join them as they walk around the track all night.

The goal is to raise $250,000 for the American Cancer Society — the event's sponsor. The event has already taken in more than $175,000.

"Cancer never sleeps so we won't either," said Zach Dittelman, one of the event's organizers.

A special luminaria ceremony will feature students speaking about the community's fight against cancer. Hundreds of white paper bags will be placed around the track. The bags will be decorated with personal messages. A candle will be placed inside each one.
