Carjacking Leads To Attempted-Murder Charge In Passaic Co.: Prosecutor

The victim, who sustained multiple lacerations, was taken to the hospital, according to authorities.

CLIFTON, NJ — A man faces several charges, including attempted murder, after assaulting someone and stealing their car, according to the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office. The Aug. 20 incident left the victim hospitalized, authorities said.

Officials issued a warrant for Zahir Christmas's arrest before he was apprehended Aug. 28 around Fourth Avenue Beach in Asbury Park, the prosecutor's office said.

Clifton police responded at about 11 p.m. Aug. 20 for a report of an injured man around 1255 Broad St., authorities said. Officials took the victim to Saint Joseph's University Medical Center in Paterson after seeing he sustained multiple lacerations, according to the prosecutor's office.

The victim told police he was assaulted, and law enforcement later identified Christmas as the suspect. Christmas, 37, of Newark, was charged with attempted murder, armed robbery, carjacking (all first-degree), aggravated assault (second-degree) and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose (third-degree).

The state filed a motion for Christmas's pretrial detention, which a judge granted Friday.
