Incidentally, Catholics looking to chow down on corned beef or shepherd’s pie on St. Patrick’s Day have been given the blessing to do so, though many traditionally abstain from meat on Fridays during Lent as part of a holy obligation.

The Archdioceses of Newark, Camden, Metuchen, Paterson, and Trenton all granted permission for Catholics to eat meat on Friday the 17th, possibly substituting another day that week to abstain from meat.
