Dangerous Booby Traps Found In High Mountain Park Preserve, Cops Say

A Wayne resident has seen traps along the trails since June 23, police said.

Wayne police are actively investigating dangerous booby-traps set up along trails in High Mountain Park Preserve.

A Wayne resident who is a regular on the trails has come across multiple traps since June 23, police said.

These booby-traps are extremely dangerous to hikers and mountain bikers. The traps are made of wood boards with screws and nails sticking out of them that are placed beneath the surface of the trail, police said.

There are also broken bottles hidden behind or next to rocks or logs along the trails. A rope and barbed wire were also found placed across pathways.

“Some of these were placed just under the road surface to injure persons on foot or bicycle tires,” Captain Laurence Martin said. “The barbed wire and rope that was strung across the pathways raises the threat to serious injury or death.”

High Mountain Park Preserve is shared between Wayne, North Haledon, and Franklin Lakes. William Paterson University is also located near the park.
