Dawa Food Mart Reportedly Settles Wawa Lawsuit, Will Change Name

The convenience store giant went after a Paterson food mart, claiming its name, DaWA, is too close to theirs.

PASSAIC COUNTY, NJ — Wawa has won a lawsuit against the owner of a North Jersey food market regarding its name.

Wawa filed a federal lawsuit against Dawa Food market of Paterson in February. The South Jersey convenience store giant ordered the store to change its name, claiming its customers would be confused and think that DaWA is associated with Wawa.

The stores agreed DaWA would change its name, according to a proposed order filed in U.S. District Court, but it does not specify what the stores new name will be, NorthJersey.com reported.

Dawa owner Mike Han said in February that he chose the name because everyone is welcome there; "Dawa" means "welcome" in Korean. Han could not be reached for comment Monday.

Wawa previously said it reached out to Han several times to try and resolve the matter amicably before filing the lawsuit.

A Wawa spokesperson could not immediately be reached for comment.

Patch could not obtain a copy of the lawsuit or the proposed order.
