Dentist Uses a Laser to Improve Gum Surgery

A Wayne dentist is making gum surgery easier on patients.

Dr. Laurence Breiterman is using a new laser to perform periodontal surgery on patients. The surgery, called Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP). The procedure involves using a laser to remove harmful bacteria, tarter, diseased tissue in between a patient’s teeth and gums.

Breiterman is one of only five dentists in New Jersey performing LANAP surgery. He runs Advanced Dental Techniques on Hamburg Turnpike.

“There have been cases where people were about to lose their teeth but rather than go through a painful procedure, they opted for the LANAP,” Breiterman said.

By using this less invasive procedure, Breiterman said, patients recovery time is reduced, they heal quicker, and there’s less post-treatment discomfort.

“It’s doing for periodontal disease what LASIK is doing for people’s vision,” Breiterman said. “It’s really a great procedure.”
