DePaul Catholic HS Students Raise $2,500 in 8 Hours Selling Pink T-Shirts

Half of the funds went to a DePaul mother who is battling cancer and to fellow student Nadia Michalewski's breast cancer walk fund.

DePaul Catholic High School students sold 500 pink t-shirts prior to last Thursday night’s home football game, raising $2,500.

The students behind the idea to sell shirts, Liam Corbutt from Pompton Plains and Lou March from Wayne are the lead members of the school’s school spirit group, The Pit. However, the end result, including the dividing of funds, was a collaborative effort.

Corbutt and March approached Mr. Bryan Murray, Dean of Students, with the idea to sell pink t-shirts to raise money for Breast Cancer Awareness. At the same time, Nadia Michalewski from Bloomingdale was looking for a fundraiser to help support her efforts during the upcoming Avon Walk for Breast Cancer where she will walk 39 miles over two days. Mr. Murray put the three students in contact with each other, and the rest, as they say, is history.

The pink t-shirts, donning the words THE PIT #pinkout2014, were generously donated by March Associates, Inc. The students sold them for a short period of time prior to the Oct. 2 football game vs. Northern Highlands. This game was also the Pink Game, in which football players wore pink tape and cheerleaders wore pink bows, and Senior Night.

Of the $2,500 raised, half was presented to Michalewski, who is now less than $150 away from her $1,800 goal, and the other half was donated to a DePaul family whose mother is battling cancer.

“We are looking for more ways to fundraise,” said Corbutt. “We’ve been talking to Mr. Murray and Mr. Tweed (DePaul President) about what we can do at the Paramus Catholic game coming up on Halloween. We have some ideas.”
