Ex-Employee Charged With Wayne Restaurant Burglary

Drew J. Canning, 27, allegedly discarded cash register drawers were thrown into the Ramapo River behind the restaurant, police said.

WAYNE, NJ — A former employee of McCobb's Family Restaurant has been charged with robbing the popular Hamburg Turnpike establishment.

Drew J. Canning, 27, of Pompton Lakes, was charged with burglary after Detective Henry Ellis investigated the Dec. 10 burglary, Detective Capt. Laurence Martin said.

Restaurant workers reported that when they opened the restaurant at 10 a.m. that day they found a few hundreds dollars, the cash register drawers, some rolled coins and tip jars were missing, Martin said

The cash register drawers were found discarded in the Ramapo River behind the restaurant, police said.

Canning also allegedly tried to open the business' safe, but couldn't, police said.

Ellis collected evidence and interviewed people, which led to Canning being charged with burglary Friday, Martin said.

Canning surrendered to authorities and was being held at the Passaic County Jail pending a detention hearing, police said.
