Details Revealed After 2 Women Die In N.J. Highway Crashes

A woman is dead after her car collided with a tractor-trailer in South Jersey around around 4:22 a.m., Saturday, police said.

The accident, which happened in the southbound lanes at milepost 34.4 on Route 295 in Cherry Hill, involved a Nissan Maxima that crashed into the back of a truck that was sitting on the shoulder, police said.

After emergency crews needed a half hour to free the unidentified woman from the Nissan, the driver, Tahera Clark-Brooks, 21, of Somerdale was rushed to Cooper University Hospital, where she later died from her injuries. She had sustained serious head injuries, while the truck driver was uninjured.

Authorities also have identified the victim of the fatal Saturday morning crash on another major N.J. highway, police said.

Zaira Rijos-Laureano, 37, of Haeldon, was killed when the car she was a passenger in crashed on I-80 eastbound at milepost 53.7 in Wayne, said State Police Trooper Alejandro Goez.

The car hit a light pole, and the passenger was ejected from the car and pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, Jerico Arias, 27, of Paterson, suffered "moderate injuries," Goez said. He was taken to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center in Paterson, police said.

State Police are investigating the crash. No charges have been filed, Goez said.
