Fencing Phenom Wins Gold At World Cup

Francesca Russo helps Women's Saber Team capture its first gold medal at event in three years.

World-class fencer Francesca Russo won a gold medal as a member of the United States Women’s Saber Team at the 2012 World Cup on Sunday, USA Fencing reported Monday.

The team won bronze medals in the previous two World Cups.

The girls defeated teams from France, Ukraine, and Russia to win the gold.

Russo, who attends , had made a few trips to the podium this year.

Russo at the Cadet World Championship in Russia and finished third in the Dourdan Junior World Cup in France in January.

Russo has also excelled at the local level. She won her second consecutive state championship in March.

Russo began fencing when she was 9 and has been competing ever since. She regularly attends international fencing tournaments in other countries.
