Free Comic Book Day falls on the first Saturday in May each year. Shops have different policies on how many free comics each customer can receive, but patrons will get at least one free comic from each participating location. Libraries can also sign up to partner with the program.

The event, which began in 2002, celebrates independent comic book shops. Free Comic Book Day has become popular at shops in the United States and Canada but can also be found at shops throughout the world.
