If you’re pro-life, here’s something you should know.

A 2013 study from George Washington University found about 48% of US births are covered by Medicaid, up from 40% in 2008. Half of all American children with disabilities and special needs depend on Medicaid for medication and treatments that keep them alive.

Medicaid also supports 1.4 million nursing home residents. Eleven million veterans— Americans who put their lives on the line for their country— depend on Medicaid.

Here in the NJ, where 1200 lives were lost in 2015 to drug addiction, the ACA’s Medcaid expansion has expanded treatment for those suffering from drug addiction.

The Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church states health care is a basic human right. Pope Francis says “Health is not a consumer good but a universal right, so access to health services cannot be a privilege.” The Union of Reformed Judaism writes “Providing health care is not just an obligation for the patient and the doctor, but for society as well.”

Without Medicaid, millions of American lives— including infants, children, the elderly, veterans, and addicts— will be in danger. How is it possible that the party that says it’s Pro-Life is also looking to dismantle a program that sustains life?

It’s time for our Senators who proclaim they are Pro-Life to prove it. It’s time to put People before Politics, and before tax cuts, and improve, not dismantle, the ACA and Medicaid coverage.
