Letter: Wayne GOP Pres. Endorses MIller Ryan Slate Of Candidates

'Chris Vergano had 10 years to make Wayne a better place for us all, but he has failed us,' Robert Altshuler said.

To the editor:

I'm writing today about the Tuesday Republican primary for the mayorship of Wayne.

It saddens me that incumbent Chris Vergano has resorted to yet another dirty trick, distorting the truth in an attempt to distract voters from his record on the real issues facing Wayne.

Here's the truth: Lonni Miller Ryan and her husband exercised their Constitutional rights as citizens and filed a tax appeal in 2012.

Due to the backlog in the New Jersey Tax Courts, the tax appeal has not yet been heard nor has it been denied. Subsequent appeals have been filed, pending the determination of the initial 2012 appeal. She should not have to give up her rights as a citizen when she became an elected official.

Raising the tax appeal again and again is the act of a desperate opponent. And claiming that she can her husband have legal and financial trouble are the type of political smear tactics that turn us all off. Filing a tax appeal in no way means someone is in financial trouble, but rather that they feel that their home has been unreasonably assessed. They are appealing their taxes as more than 3,000 Wayne residents have over the past 10 years.

I have know Lonni for almost 15 years. She is honest and hard-working and has served our township with distinction. I share her vision for Wayne and know she will help give Wayne back to its citizens. She's been opposed to high-density housing and has a real understanding of state and local issues and laws that will serve our town well.

Chris Vergano had 10 years to make Wayne a better place for us all, but he has failed us. We're left with empty stores, lower property values and higher taxes. Residents, businesses and even township employees are not treated with respect.

I believe it's time for a change and ask you to join me to support Lonni Miller Ryan and her runningmates Jim Marrocco, Matt Rosenthal and Kevin Kearney for Township Council.

I voted for them as a member of the Wayne Republican Organization and as the President of the Wayne Republican Club; and I ask that you vote for them on Tuesday, June 6. Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
