Corrections Officer Found Dead At North Jersey Park

Timothy Carpenter, 49, shot himself inside a vehicle in a wooded area of Garret Mountain Reservation Tuesday, officials said.

A Passaic County corrections officer shot and killed himself in an apparent suicide at Garret Mountain Reservation in Woodland Park, authorities announced.

Timothy Carpenter, 49, of West Milford, is believed to be the victim of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes said in a news release Thursday.

Carpenter was found inside a vehicle in a wooded area of the reservation, Valdes said.

Carpenter was a corrections officer with the Passaic County Sheriff's Office, Valdes said. He held the rank of lieutenant.

The New Jersey State Police and the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office are investigating.
