Man Threatened To Kill Wayne Cop During Investigation Into Stolen Used Cooking Oil: PD

WAYNE, NJ —Thieves have been stealing used cooking oil from restaurants in the area, and Wayne Police said a man threatened to kill an officer after urinating inside a police vehicle during a recent investigation into those thefts.

Two North Jersey men face charges after a traffic stop last Thursday, according to Wayne police.

A township police officer stopped a van driver on May 4 just before 7:10 a.m. for several driving violations, said Detective Captain Dan Daly.

The officer "detected the odor of cooking oil" on the two men inside, and their clothes and the rubber gloves they were wearing "appeared covered in oil " according to Daly. The officer requested backup, and two other Wayne officers arrived.

Used cooking oil can be taken to reprocessing plants and its value has been increasing with rising energy costs, according to reports from NBC4 New York and TAPinto.

One occupant, 30-year-old Tysheem Goode, had a warrant for the theft of used cooking oil out of Morris County and was placed under arrest. Police said Goode, of Plainfield, admitted that a tank in the rear of the van contained cooking oil.

Then police put the other man, identified as 33-year-old Rasheed Wright, under arrest. Police said he caused "substantial damage" to the patrol vehicle by kicking the door interior. He also spit and urinated in the vehicle while police transported him to headquarters, Daly said.

A sergeant who had arrived told Wright he would be placed in leg shackles to be taken into Wayne PD headquarters. Police said Wright tried to prevent officers from putting the restraints on. Officers subdued him, but said Wright refused to walk and "had to be carried into headquarters for processing."

Wright also threatened to kill the officer who had made the traffic stop, according to Daly.

Police charged Goode, of Newark, with receiving stolen property and turned him over to the custody of Morris County detectives.

Wright, of Plainfield, faces charges of receiving stolen property, criminal mischief, resisting arrest, terroristic threats, and obstructing a governmental function according to officials. Police charged him on a complaint, and he is currently in the Passaic County Jail pending a detention hearing.
