Driver Charged With Murder In Boston-Area Apple Store Crash That Killed NJ Man

WAYNE, NJ — A Massachusetts man faces murder charges after officials say he drove his vehicle into an Apple store last fall, killing a man from Wayne and injuring almost two dozen others.

The crash in a Boston suburb on Nov. 21, 2022 injured 22 people and killed 65-year-old Kevin Bradley of Wayne, according to Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz.

A grand jury indicted Bradley Rein, 53, of Hingham on one count each of murder in the second degree and motor vehicle homicide by reckless operation in Bradley's death, said Cruz's office on Wednesday.

The Plymouth County grand jury additionally voted to indict Rein on reckless operation of a motor vehicle, 18 counts of aggravated assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and four counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon for injuring the other people in the crash, the DA said.

The crash occurred Nov. 21, 2022 at around 10:45 a.m., when first responders received multiple 911 calls from the Derby Street Shoppes, where the store is located, officials said. Rein had driven his 2019 Toyota 4Runner into the store, striking multiple people, and pinning some against a wall, according to authorities.

Bystanders helped the victims before first responders arrived, the DA's office said. Bradley was pronounced dead at the scene.

Rein told police that his foot got stuck on the accelerator pedal and he couldn't make his vehicle stop, according to the DA. Officials did not specify why he has been charged with murder.

Rein’s attorney, Joan Fund, said she was “astounded” by the murder charge.

“My client has fully cooperated with the investigation and I look forward to answering all other questions about this case in court," she told the Associated Press.

Officials alleged reckless operation of a motor vehicle and motor vehicle homicide by reckless operation at the initial arraignment in November.

Officials said Rein will be arraigned on these charges at a later date in Brockton Superior Court.

Several crash victims have filed lawsuits alleging negligence against the owner of the property, the developer, the management of the property, Apple, and Rein.
