NJ Redistricting Will Impact Future Elections In Wayne

Who will represent Wayne in Congress for the next 10 years? Here's how 'redistricting' will affect the township.

WAYNE, NJ — Every decade, the process of "redistricting" tweaks Congressional lines throughout New Jersey. And this year, the state's new map is shaking things up for several towns and cities, including Wayne.

Currently, Wayne is in New Jersey's in New Jersey's 11th Congressional District, which Rep. Mikie Sherrill represents. But the redrawn map places the northern portion of the township in the 9th Congressional District, which Rep. Bill Pascrell leads. Sherrill and Pascrell are Democrats.

Under the New Jersey Constitution, the redistricting commission must adopt the new congressional districts map by majority vote of its members, and certify the map to the New Jersey secretary of state on or before Jan. 18.

Sherrill has held the 11th District seat since 2019, becoming the first Democrat to represent the district in the House of Representatives since 1985. Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen led the district from 1995-2019 after not seeking re-election in 2018.

Pascrell has represented the 9th District since 2013. Democrats have held the seat since 1983.
