“The Passaic County Board of County Commissioners is continually seeking funding opportunities to help improve the outdoor park experience for our residents and visitors,” stated Commissioner Director Pat Lepore. “The funding we secured will allow the County to expand our recreational opportunities in the County Park System and continue to build upon the quality of our facilities that the county is well known for. We’re thankful to Governor Murphy and the Department of Environmental Protection for their investment in our county.”

Since 2014, the Passaic County Board of County Commissioners have invested over $45 million in improvements to Passaic County’s parks, recreational areas, and historic sites. Currently, all five of the projects that received grants are under design.

The County is continuing to invest in the preservation of Lambert Castle, located at the base of Garret Mountain Reservation. The next phase of work includes landscaping around the Castle which is as significant as the building itself. The original sitework of Lambert's era created a lush setting for the Castle; then in the 1930’s the Passaic County Park Commission expanded the site, incorporating it into the regional park system, and developed a naturalistic site plan. Work was executed to the designs of the Olmsted Brothers firm. The site’s landscape and the gardens intended by Lambert will be restored in a phased approached. The project is currently under design.

The Passaic County Park System is comprised of 4,000 acres of dedicated recreation and open space in Passaic County. Amenities include a 36-hole championship level golf course, hiking trails, athletic fields, nature preserves, and historic sites.
