Quick Chek Store To Be Built On Strawberry Blossom Property

Planning Board approved an application to construct a convenience store and gas station where the longtime business is on Route 23 North.

WAYNE, N.J. — The Planning Board gave the go-ahead last month to construct a Quick Chek convenience store and gas station on the Strawberry Blossom property.

The board approved a site plan to build a 4,700 square-foot convenience store, 6,900 square-foot canopy, a gas station with 10 pumps, and 64 parking spaces on the property.

The applicant, Moyer Wayne LLC of River Street, must also apply to the Passaic County Planning Board and the New Jersey Department of Transportation before construction begins.

Joe and Linda Spirko opened Strawberry Blossom in 1981. It started out small, but eventually grew into a five-acre gardening center. The family also owns Ploch’s Home & Garden Center in Clifton.

Manager Michael Spirko declined to comment on the application. It is not known when Strawberry Blossom will close.

Residents living adjacent to the property on Sleepy Hollow Drive questioned the facility’s security, the application shows. They want a fence installed between the property and Sleepy Hollow Drive.

If the county planning board and state DOT sign off on the project, it will be the third Quick Chek store located in Wayne.

The 128-year-old, family-owned Quick Chek Corp. opened a 6,300 square-foot store near the William Paterson University campus on Pompton Road in October 2013. The company operates 140 stores throughout New Jersey and New York. That store is open 24 hours a day.

Another store is located at 2333 Hamburg Turnpike, near the Pompton Lakes border. That store also has a gas station.
