Residents Taken Aback By West Belt Highway Extension Plan

Wetlands, trees would be leveled if county officials approve the plan.

A federal-funded project to relieve congestion and improve travel safety along Two Bridges and Fairfield roads Route 23 south has residents upset.

An extension of the West Belt Highway to a new Pompton River crossing, which was installed to improve traffic flow between Two Bridges Road and Route 23, is upsetting residents of the Finn’s Mobile Home Park, a trailer park that is located near a large wetland area where the West Belt Highway goes, NorthJersey.com reported.

The adjacent Passaic River floods the trailer park and the nearby wetlands and trees help alleviate the flooding somewhat by soaking up the waters, the website reported; residents also appreciate the serene environment the trees provide.

Marguerite Ball said that the proposed plan would not only impact residents of the mobile home park, but residents of Fairfield Road, Two Bridges Road, and Fayette Avenue, she told the website.

County officials are expected to hold an informational meeting for the project in Wayne and Lincoln Park in July.
