Severe Thunderstorm Warning Issued In Wayne: NWS

Strong thunderstorms with 60-mph wind gusts and penny-sized hail are moving into the county Tuesday afternoon, said weather forecasters.

WAYNE, NJ — Strong thunderstorms with heavy rain, wind, and frequent lightning are forecast to hit Wayne on Tuesday afternoon, as the National Weather Service has put up a severe thunderstorm warning until 3:30 p.m.

The storms are expected to move through the Wayne area between 3:20 and 3:25 p.m., per the National Weather Service.

"Expect damage to trees and power lines," said forecasters.

Communities across the Garden State could see scattered wind gusts up to 70 miles per hour, frequent lightning, and isolated hail up to the size of a ping-pong ball with storms Tuesday, added NWS forecasters. The state remains under a severe thunderstorm watch until 8 p.m., with warnings popping up locally.

Showers and thunderstorms from mid-afternoon until sunset "have the potential to produce localized heavy rainfall of 1 to 2 inches, strong winds, and hail," forecasters said.

Temperatures in Wayne and around northeastern New Jersey are predicted to reach into the 90s Thursday, and may approach 100 degrees on Friday. Forecasters said there is a chance the heat index will reach 105 degrees on both days.

Here is the forecast for Wayne Township through Friday, according to the National Weather Service:

Tuesday Afternoon: A chance of showers and thunderstorms, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 4pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 83. Southwest wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Tuesday Night: Showers and thunderstorms likely before midnight, then a slight chance of showers between midnight and 2am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 66. Light west wind. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Wednesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 88. Calm wind becoming southwest 5 to 7 mph in the afternoon.

Wednesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 71. South wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening.

Thursday: A slight chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after noon. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds. Partly sunny, with a high near 96. Southwest wind 5 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20 percent.

Thursday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 73.

Friday: Sunny, with a high near 97.

Friday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 74.
