Tests and assessments are scheduled throughout the year, and began this week for some Wayne Township high school students.
WAYNE, NJ — With the first month of school come and gone, some Wayne Township Public Schools students are already thinking about standardized testing, and the district shared the schedule for school assessments this year.
High school juniors and some sophomores were scheduled to take the PSAT on Wednesday, Oct. 10 according to the school district's assessment schedule. The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test is optional, and used to determine eligibility and qualification for the National Merit Scholars Program.
Some high school students will take the New Jersey Graduation Proficiency Assessment (NJGPA) for math or English language arts in the fall, with the testing window from Oct. 10 to Oct. 16 according to the school district.

This includes students who are scheduled to graduate in the class of 2024, but either did not take or did not meet one or both components of the NJGPA in Spring 2023. It also includes students who did not have enough credits to take the test as juniors in the spring.
Current juniors who are expected to graduate in the class of 2025 must wait until the spring 2024 administration to take the NJGPA for the first time.

From the New Jersey Student Learning Assessment in the spring to district-level assessments, school districts in the state have a range of standardized testing scheduled for at least some of their students nearly every month of the school year.
There also are several smaller state-mandated assessments for students who have disabilities, and students for whom English is not a second language.
It is particularly intensive in high school, where students are taking the PSAT, various college entrance tests, and have been subject to passing the high school graduation test for decades.
The federal government requires yearly statewide assessments in reading/language arts and math for all students in third through eighth grades and once in high school, and statewide assessments in science at least once in each of grades 3-5, 6-9, and 10-12, under the Every Student Succeeds Act.
