NJ Wants Apple To Be More Up Front With Its Prices

Apple must display the 'pricing wedges' on each table where iPhones, iPads, MacBooks and Apple Watches are sold.

Apple Inc. has agreed to be more up front about its products' prices after an investigation by the state Division of Consumer Affairs.

State authorities alleged in a complaint that Apple's method of displaying prices digitally on its products at the company's 12 New Jersey stores violated state consumer protection laws. In its complaint, the division alleged that Apple violated state law because the prices on devices was not continuously visible to customers.

Apple displays prices of its products through applications and notifications on the devices themselves. Now, 4-by-3-inch "pricing wedges" will be placed on each table where iPhones, iPads, MacBooks, Apple Watches and other electronic devices are sold. The signs will display the total selling prices of each product displayed at a particular table.

“We are pleased to have reached a resolution that honors New Jersey’s commitment to transparency in the marketplace while allowing Apple to continue offering its customers a tech-forward shopping experience,” said Sharon M. Joyce, acting director of the Division of Consumer Affairs.
