Ukraine Flag To Get Raised At Wayne Candlelight Vigil
The Wayne Township Council recently unanimously passed a resolution supporting Ukrainians and their nation's sovereignty.
WAYNE, NJ — The township will raise the Ukraine flag and hold a candlelight vigil for Ukrainians at 6:45 p.m. Wednesday at Town Hall.
The event comes off the heels of several efforts from Wayne officials to support the Ukrainian people. The township has collected donations for the Ukrainian Orthodox Holy Ascension Church of Clifton’s humanitarian-aid drive, with a bin located by the police department in the Municipal Building. The measure includes support for Ukraine's resistance against Russia and the United States's continued use of "peaceful methods including sanctions" to fully isolate Russia President Vladimir Putin's administration.
The council also expressed support for New Jersey's suspension of relationships with businesses and financial institutions backed by Russia's government. Gov. Phil Murphy signed a bill into law March 9 prohibiting dealings with businesses associated with Russia and Belarus, its close ally. The State Assembly and Senate passed the bill unanimously.

New Jersey has 75,000 residents of Ukrainian descent — many of whom live in Wayne and neighboring communities, according to the resolution.
The United Nations reported 977 civilian deaths from the war in Ukraine since Russia invaded on Feb. 24. But they believe the actual death toll is considerably higher, with delays in receiving information and reports pending corroboration.
