Ukraine's Twitter Follows NJ, And Hardly Anyone Else; Nation Calls NJ 'Cool'

The Garden State has recieved international attention after a callout from Ukraine online explaining why the nation follows NJ social media.

NEW JERSEY — War may not seem like a time for levity. But that's often what you'll get from Ukraine's official Twitter account, especially when they acknowledge New Jersey.

Ukraine has 1.5 million Twitter followers, but the nation only follows 24 accounts. They only follow one U.S. state's Twitter account: New Jersey's.

Twitter user @P____nut tweeted this observation Friday. The nation's official response? "Cauz they're cool," Ukraine tweeted.

The response has more than 31,000 likes and about 5,000 retweets, shattering the numbers of the original post — this is what's called "ratioing" on Twitter. @P____nut now states in his online bio that both the New Jersey and Ukraine accounts have ratioed him.

New Jersey's Twitter account, which is also known for sassy presence, tweeted hearts in the colors of Ukraine's flag.

Ukraine's social media team has maintained a sense of humor, even amid the crisis sparked by Russia's Thursday invasion. The war has killed 406 civilians as of Sunday night, according to Michelle Bachelet, the United Nations commissioner for human rights.

As sanctions against Russia continue to pile, governors in New Jersey, Connecticut, Virginia and Washington also have ordered a review of whether any state money is going to Russian companies or investments supporting the Russian government.
