Vergano: Wayne's Friday Vaccine Clinic Ran "Smoothly"

WAYNE, NJ — Wayne Township and the township's Health Department have made the switch from providing COVID-19 testing to administering COVID-19 vaccines.

In a video message, Mayor Christopher Vergano reported that the township offered 300 doses of the vaccine during Friday's inaugural vaccination clinic.

The vaccines went to those in Category 1A, Vergano said, adding that operations on Friday were "running very smoothly."

According to Vergano, a total of 3,641 residents have tested positive for COVID-19, and 196 residents have died.

With numbers spiking — over 1,000 residents tested positive in December — vaccine distribution is a welcome sign of hope, but availability is still limited.

Only those who qualify for Category 1A, as well as sworn law enforcement, fire professionals, and other first responders who fit the criteria for Phase 1B can get vaccinated at this time.

More doses are expected this week in Wayne, said Vergano. The clinic will be held weekly, he added, depending on the number of vaccine doses available to the township.

The vaccine site, located at the vacant Macy's storefront in the Preakness Shopping Center, is part of a joint effort between the township's Health Department and Emergency Management Service, Vergano said.

In addition to the vaccines being offered at the township's site, Wayne's 12 nursing homes are beginning to administer vaccines, Vergano said.

The current plan, according to the Mayor, is to offer on-site vaccinations at Sienna Village, Cisco Village, Summer Hill Apartments and Four Seasons complex when the state reaches that portion of the vaccination plan.
