Virtual Reality, Laptops, And Tighter Security At Wayne Schools

3 more school resource officers will be at the middle and elementary schools this year, officials said.

WAYNE, NJ — Greater security, more STEM learning, and one-to-one computing are all initiatives students and parents will see at township schools this year.

Security

Three additional school resource officers will be assigned to township middle and elementary schools later on this fall. The officers, known as class III officers, are recently retired police officers trained as school resource officers.

Until those officers are hired, the district will employ Wayne Police Department officers on extra duty assignments until the new SROs are hired.

Security vestibules will be installed in some school building to "better control access," said Superintendent Mark Toback.

"We are also continuing with a far more stringent visitor vetting and entry policy that was implemented last year," Toback said.

Technology Upgrades

Students at Schuyler-Colfax will utilize virtual reality learning center at the school's new pilot STEM lab.

The next phase of renovating the high school science lab has begun. Additional labs will be complete by December and the district will move onto phase three next school year, Toback said.

Every high school student will have a Chromebook after freshman and sophomores received them last year. The district's wireless computer network has been upgraded to make sure it functions properly.

Building Upgrades

The district is nearly finished with replacing the roof at Randall Carter Elementary School.

A new air conditioning unit will have a new air conditioning unit in its media center.

Parking lots, sidewalks, and curbs at various district campuses have been repaired as well.
