WAYNE, NJ — You can almost taste the hoagies and smell the coffee. An opening date has been set for Wawa's Wayne location, more than three years after it got approval from the township planning board.

The Pennsylvania-based chain has more than 280 stores in New Jersey, but this will be the first in Passaic County.

The gas station and convenience store will be located at 1512 Route 23, where Nagel's Candy Barn used to be — offering freshly-made food, handcrafted drinks, and a variety of snacks.

And, the grand opening date is scheduled for Dec. 14 at 8 a.m., according to a list of future openings on Wawa's website.

As with its other grand openings in the Garden State, Wawa will be offering free t-shirts to the first 100 customers in the door, and free coffee all day. Local heroes will also participate in a hoagie-building contest.

Some local residents fought the proposal to knock down Nagel's and build the 4,736-square-foot Wawa with 52 spots and gas station with eight pumps. Nearby neighbors had expressed concerns over the environmental impact, traffic and home property values.

Wayne's Planning Board approved the proposal in November 2020.
