UPDATE: 'Children First,' Matthew Giordano Lead In Wayne With All Districts Reporting

3 challengers hold the top spots in an 8-candidate field that includes the board's current president.

Update: All Wayne voting districts now have results, according to Passaic County election officials.


WAYNE, NJ — Election Night has extended into the morning in Wayne Township's Board of Education race. With all districts reporting results as of Wednesday morning, three challengers hold the top spots in an eight-candidate field that includes the board's current president.

Barbara Rigoglioso (8,341 votes) and Ryan Battershill (7,508), who both ran on the "Children First" ticket, hold the top two spots. Matthew Giordano (5,631) holds the third-available position, with Stacey Scher (5,510) and Suzanne Pudup (5,432) holding the next-highest vote totals.

Results remain unofficial pending certification.

Pudup is currently the school board president, running on the "United not Divided" ticket with Scher and Jacob Van Lunen. She's the only incumbent candidate as Board Trustees Michael Bubba and Dawn Kumar didn't seek re-election. Kumar resigned from the board last month.

"We just wanted to take a moment to say thank you to all the people that supported us through this entire election," the United not Divided campaign wrote on social media. "We are proud of the clean campaign that we ran and hope that the Wayne Education system continues to thrive for all our wonderful students."

With major leads on Election Night, Battershill said the early results show a "clear win" for the Children First ticket. Battershill's fellow candidate, Rigoglioso, thanked the voters Tuesday night.

"I am so humbled and proud that you have the confidence to elect me to the board of education," Rigoglioso said. "I will always have the best interest of the children and citizens of Wayne."
