Wayne School Officials Considering Wrap-Around Kindergarten Program

District parents are being asked what they think about $250-a-month program.

In response to Wayne residents voting down full-day kindergarten last month, officials are considering implementing a tuition-based enrichment program to complement the district’s half-day kindergarten program.

Residents voted down a referendum question in November asking them if full-day kindergarten should be implemented in the district. Approving the measure would have meant a $65 increase in school taxes this year.

The voluntary, fee-based ”wrap-around” program would complement the district’s half-day kindergarten sessions.

Wayne public school teachers would run the program. It, combined with the existing kindergarten program, would add up to 180 ”regular elementary school” days of school, officials said.

Parents would pay approximately $250 a month in tuition.

What school the program would be held in will be based on how many students enroll in it and what school best accommodates that number.

Superintendent Mark Toback did not return a message seeking comment Thursday afternoon.

One of the questions asked on the survey is what areas parents think would be of interest to their child, i.e. art, music, technology, movement, discovery learning, or social/emotional learning.
