Wayne Sports Authority To Close Amid Bankruptcy Filing

Store is one of five in New Jersey that will close down.

WAYNE, NJ – The Sports Authority store near the Willowbrook Mall will close down, bankruptcy paperwork filed by the company shows.

The store is one of 140 nationwide and five of 21 in New Jersey to close down. The others are in Cherry Hill, East Brunswick, Manalapan, and Piscataway.

About 3,400 of the company’s 15,000 employees are expected to be laid off, The Denver Post reported.

The company lost $256 million before taxes in fiscal year 2015, The Wall Street Journal reported. The remaining store could also close if the company doesn’t meet the stipulations of the bankruptcy filing, the Journal also reported.

Published reports said Sports Authority used to be the number one sporting goods retailer but has been overtaken by Dick’s Sporting Goods. Dick’s has a Wayne location adjacent to the Wayne Sports Authority store.
