Wayne Wrap-Around Kindergarten Program Hosts Orientation

More than 100 parents learned how technology will be used in the controversial program.

WAYNE, N.J. — More than 100 parents attended an orientation Tuesday for the public school district's new, and controversial, kindergarten wrap-around program.

Parents and students met with teachers and learned, district officials said, about the use of technology in the program. They used a Smart Table, an interactive display made just for children meant to enhance lessons.

The district developed the tuition-based program after residents last November rejected bringing a full-day kindergarten program. A group of residents worked hard to convince voters a full-day program was needed despite the tax increase it would bring. Tuition costs $250 a month.

Voters will again go to the polls November and vote on bringing a full-day kindergarten program to Wayne, the only district in Passaic County that does not have one.

The district developed the wrap-around program after researching similar programs in other North Jersey school districts, including Ramsey and Madison. It has a maximum enrollment of 160 students.
