William Paterson University Students Study Life 50 Years Ago

Ever wondered or remembered what life was like in 1964? These students are finding out.

How do you remember 1964?

William Paterson University students are finding out as they work on a special project this semester called Eye on ’64 in their Advanced Reporting class.

Eye on ‘64 takes a look back at what was happening a half-century ago in 1964.

One person who is sure to remember is the Advanced Reporting class’s supervisor, Dr. Tina Lesher, who was a college senior in 1964.

For the multimedia Eye on ’64 website, students, most of which are seniors, have written and made videos about various events that took place in 1964 from a Presidential election, the passage of the Civil Rights Act, a World’s Fair in New York and the escalation of the Vietnam War.

Meghan Sowa, who writes for the Pioneer Times, an award winning student newspaper, decided to focus on weddings in 1964.

“The most interesting part of this project was to see the cost differences between what weddings cost today, compared to 1964,” said Sowa.

But the project has proven to be more than an assignment for Sowa.

“I realized I really love to report,” Sowa said.
